Acer Introduces "Quad-Core" Laptop

If you’re looking for a supercharged notebook experience, the Acer 8930G is here to provide you with an entirely hyperbolic quad-core processor. Just in case you need to do some serious processing on the go, I suppose.

CNET is pretty down on whether a quad-core processor is truly necessary on a laptop computer, and though it probably isn’t, it’s not like the 8930G is entirely outrageous.

With a suggested retail price of only $1,799, it might actually be worth it to never worry about being behind on processor speed.

Not to mention the fact that you get a large, 18-inch display and a Blu-ray disc drive.

Asus EEE PC

Asus is perhaps the most recognizable brand name in the netbooks category, and their Eee PCs have been dominating the market mostly because, until this point, there hasn’t been competition. The Asus Eee PC 900 seems like the most appealing series in the line, offering a moderately sized 8.9″ display, 1GB of RAM, and the choice between a Linux operating system or Windows XP (for roughly $50 more).

The Asus Eee PC 901 is a particular standout, as it comes with Intel’s new Atom mobile processor, giving it a slight advantage over the other Celeron based 900 models. Asus Eee netbooks typically cost between $250 and $500, depending on model.

Intel Core 2 Extreme X9000 Processor Coming Soon

Intel plans to release its Core 2 Extreme X9000 “Penryn” mobile processor in mid February. The CPU will be available in select notebooks in late February or March, Fudzilla reports.

“This is going to be the fastest mobile chip and it will definitely fill the gap for desktop replacement gamers who will finally get a very fast CPU,” the report says.

The Intel Core 2 Extreme X9000 belongs to the new 45-nanometer “Penryn” laptop CPU line and is clocked at 2.8GHz. It uses 800MHz front side bus and has 6MB of L2 cache. The X9000 is most likely overclockable.

According to earlier reports, the X9000’s price is $851 in 1000-unit tray quantities.

Intel’s performance tests show that the Core 2 Extreme X9000 has 4% and 7% better score in 3DMark06 and Cinebench R10 benchmarks respectively, than the 65nm Core 2 Extreme X7900 with 4MB of L2 cache and the same clock speed.

ThinkPad X300 Information Leaks Out

The information leak for the ThinkPad X300 comes from Gizmodo and certainly looks to be real, the pictures and information come from a Lenovo internal powerpoint document. The notable specs on the X300 are as follows:

On paper the specs for the X300 are most impressive, and trump that of the MacBook Air for anyone looking for a serious business companion while on the road. The MacBook Air has a paltry one USB port, a sealed non-replaceable battery, no optical drive and no WWAN options. The ThinkPad X300 has three USB ports, a replaceable battery (important for those on long flights), built-in optical drive, every wireless option possible and a starting weight of 2.5lbs (we assume that weigh comes if you remove the optical drive and use a travel weight). To add to all that you get the SSD as a standard option, no slow 4200RPM that's the base option on the MacBook Air. The excellent screen resolution of 1440 x 900 on the X300 also outdoes the MacBoook Air's resolution of 1280 x 800. The advantage of the MacBook Air remains of course that it looks cooler (ThinkPad's are only ever available in rubbery black), it's thinner and has an innovative multi-touch touchpad.

Dell Latitude XT Tablet PC

Dell Inc. has officially unveiled the Latitude XT Tablet PC, the company’s first convertible notebook. This sub-four-pound system features a 12.1-inch display with capacitive touch technology and support for future multi-touch functionality.

Contrary to tablets relying on the older resistive touch technology, the Dell Latitude XT’s capacitive technology senses the touch of a finger or with no pressure required for the system to recognize input. The resistive technology can be less accurate and durable than capacitive touch and may not support multi-touch, according to the PC maker’s press release.

Dell also said the Latitude XT provides hardware support for its upcoming multi-touch capabilities. This technology will allow the use of more than one finger for tasks such as zoom and drawing lines.

The display will be also available with optional daylight viewing capability. The previous reports say there will be CCFL or LED backlight options and that the resolution is 1280-by-800 pixels in both cases.

The Dell Latitude XT will come with Intel Core 2 Solo or Core 2 Duo ULV (ultra-low voltage) processor, and with up to 120GB hard drive or 64GB solid state drive, depending on customer’s choice. The system uses ATI Radeon X1250 integrated graphics. Regarding communications, the XT supports 802.11n draft wireless standard, and wireless broadband 3G (HSDPA, EV-DO Rev. A) connectivity, according to the previously leaked specifications.

With an optional battery slice, the Tablet PC will provide up to 9.5 hours of run time, the company says.

The basic Latitude XT configuration will cost $2,499 and will start shipping by the end of the year.

The new Macbook Pro also features the Magsafe Power Adapter. This is not the end. Both the 15 inch and 17 inch models feature integrated charge indicator LEDs to let you know when the notebook needs a power thrust.

If you are already drooling over its features and looks, the pricing will make you go zany. Natural logic suggests a proportional increase of price with added features. Not quite. The notebook costs the same $1999. It certainly is a must-buy.

Black Hawk XR5 Features Quad Core CPU, 8800M GTX SLI

PC MicroWorks has announced the Black-Hawk XR5 17-inch gaming/workstation notebook, featuring a quad-core processor and two NVIDIA’s new Geforce 8800M GTX mobile video cards in SLI mode.

The Black-Hawk XR5 is configurable with the Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 CPU at 2.66GHz, as well as with Core 2 Extreme and Core 2 Duo. All of these chips are designed for use in desktop computers. The dual NVIDIA Geforce (”Go”) 8800M GTX option provides users with 1GB of dedicated GDDR3 video memory and support for DirectX 10 games. The 8800M GTX has not been officially announced yet. However, it is expected to be the most powerful graphics card for laptops this year.

In addition to the quad-core processor and dual video cards, the Black-Hawk XR5 desktop replacement laptop can house up to 3 SATA 300 hard drives in a RAID array and 4GB of 800MHz DDR2 system memory, PC MicroWorks says. The notebook’s 17″ widescreen display has 1920×1200 resolution.

The PC MicroWorks’ XR5 will begin shipping in December with pre-orders being taken now. The XR5 configured with the Core 2 Quad Q6700 processor, dual GeForce 8800M GTX cards, 2GB of RAM, a 200GB hard drive, and Windows Vista Home Premium operating system costs $3,798.

Lenovo Gears Up To Release Linux powered Laptop

Lenovo has just announced that the company will soon start selling its new laptops to businesses and other consumers with pre-installed Linux, which is emerging fast as a successful substitute to Microsoft Windows.

The laptops are ready and will hit our shelves sometimes at the end of this year. Early this year Dell too dropped Linux-powered laptops based on customer suggestions for new products, whose results revealed high Linux PC demands.

Linux was first introduced to the public approximately 16 years ago and was developed by Linus Torvalds who aimed to build a non-commercial substitute for an operating system used in many universities. Primarily, Linux is used to power web servers, the time when its growth on desktop computers was confined as per technology specialists, but its practice by brand names like Lenovo and Dell widened its growth and future prospects.

According to analysts, around 6% of computers users run Linux that is comparatively similar to consumers choosing Apple Macs.

Com USA Offers $299 Acer Aspire Notebook

CompUSA will be offering the Acer Aspire AS3690-2970 15.4-inch laptop for only $299 during the “2 Day Blowout” starting today.

The Aspire AS3690-2970 features the Intel Celeron M 520 processor at 1.6GHz paired with the Intel 943GML 533MHz FSB chipset. It has 512MB of system memory, a 80GB hard drive, and a Combo optical drive, as well as 802.11b/g wireless, Ethernet LAN, and 56k modem connections. The notebook’s 15.4″ display with 1280×800 resolution is managed by the Intel GMA 900 integrated graphics.

Acer Aspire 4710 Available In North America

Acer has announced the availability of the Aspire 4710 14.1-inch entertainment notebook in the North America. It features Intel Core 2 Duo processor and the recently introduced “Gemstone” chassis design, Acer’s press release says.

According to the specifications of the Acer Aspire 4710, published on the PC maker’s website for Indonesian market, this laptop is not based on Intel’s “Santa Rosa” platform. Instead, it is built on previous “Napa” platform with corresponding Core 2 Duo CPU, Intel 945GM Express Chipset and the integrated Graphics Media Accelerator 950. Acer Aspire 4710 has 14.1″ widescreen CrystalBrite display with 1280 x 800 pixel resolution, supports up to 4GB of DDR2 system memory, and comes with a built-in optical drive.

The 4710 features Intel 802.11a/b/g wireless module, a Gigabit Ethernet, and a 56K modem, as well as integrated web camera, four USB ports, an ExpressCard slot, a 5-in-1 card reader, and a Firewire port. For external displays, this notebook provides VGA and S-video outputs, while regarding sound system there are Dolby-certified surround technology and two built-in stereo speakers.

In the North American market, Acer Aspire 4710 comes with Windows Vista Home Premium operating system. Interestingly, the listed Indonesian 4710 model ships with Linux BE (Basic Edition) operating system.

Carrying a price tag of around 364,980 (JPY, VAT included) or $3077, it would certainly give some heat to its western counterparts, however, its quality is yet to be tested, but it seems a good bet especially with cutting edge features mentioned above.
